Some framers believe a pristine white mount is best for all black and white images, on the basis that it does not detract from the picture itself. However, for pictures with a white focal point, a pristine white mount can be too bright and will compete with the image for attention.

Black & white gives an image a unique level of abstraction. Your eye never operates independently of your mind. A smooth graduation in the levels of grey is quite suggestive in expressing volume or even temperature. In the days of chemical darkrooms the operator would mask some parts of the negative to give more time for some rich scales of shades to appear in the highlighted areas.

Most photographers who are serious about improving their portrait taking skills have realized that a beautiful background can greatly enhance their photographs. A less costly alternative is a digital background. With a digital background, one can get the look and feel of a professional looking portrait without the additional cost of muslin.
